Safe Pedi Disk Techniques

Are you unknowingly making your pedicure harder than it has to be?
Most mistakes with pedi disks happen right at the start. Here’s what to look out for.

Common slip-ups:

  • Wrong disk size
  • Same grit for every foot
  • Poor angle & pressure
  • Working at the wrong RPM

What to do instead

  1. Start on dry skin
Pedi disks are made for dry pedicures. You can soften the skin first with a keratolytic if needed, but it’s completely optional.
  2. Choose the right disk size and speed
    Disk size affects your RPM:
    • XS (10mm): up to 30,000 RPM
    • S (15mm): up to 30,000 RPM
    • M (20mm): up to 25,000 RPM
    • L (25mm): up to 20,000 RPM
    • The smaller the disk, the faster you can safely run your e-file.
  3. Stick your abrasive pad correctly.
Place your disposable grit pad exactly in the center of the disk — not off to the side. Let a little metal show around the edges. This gives you more control and helps avoid overheating.
  4. Start with 80–100 grit

Work at a steady 45° angle using light pressure. Don’t press down — let the speed and edge of the disk do the job. Work with gliding motions: either side to side or soft downward strokes.

    Feel heat? Stop.
If you or your client feel heat, pause and check your pressure and angle. Too much pressure or the wrong tilt can cause discomfort and skin trauma.

  5. After initial filing
If you used keratolytics, apply a neutralizer and thoroughly wipe the foot. If not — just wipe away the debris.
  6. Time to polish

Apply a light layer of foot oil. Switch to a 240–320 grit and polish the skin using the same 45° angle.

This should be done with circular or sweeping motions — very light, like you’re buffing glass.

RPM & Disk Size Guide:

  • XS (10mm): up to 30,000 RPM
  • S (15mm): up to 30,000 RPM
  • M (20mm): up to 25,000 RPM
  • L (25mm): up to 20,000 RPM

Remember:

  1. Light pressure. Let the machine do the work.
  2. Use the edge of your disk, not the full surface.
  3. Watch for heat — it’s a sign something’s wrong.

You don’t need to be a genius to get clean, safe results — you just need the right system.
